Honoring Veterans, One Wreath at a Time

Looking for a way to give thanks for more than a turkey dinner this holiday season? Consider spending a few hours later this month joining Wreaths for Vets in preparing and laying wreaths at the gravesites at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen. For the 12th year, volunteers will come together on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to lay wreaths on the graves for more than 8,300 fallen soldiers.

The beginning

On December 15, 2006, when Jean Shine attended the laying of six wreaths representing each branch of military at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, the cemetery held about 400 graves. “It was very special,” she says, “but I left feeling like each of the graves need its own wreath.” It was then that Jean went on a mission to find enough wreaths.
