The Friends of the Central Texas Veterans Cemetery is seeking volunteers for its annual wreath retrieval, slated for Sunday.

Hilary Shine, spokeswoman for the city of Killeen, said the group needs “as many volunteers as possible.”

On Nov. 30, thousands of volunteers gathered at the Central Texas Veterans Cemetery for the seventh annual laying of the wreaths.

An escort of more than 190 motorcycles followed an 18-wheeler carrying nearly 5,000 wreaths into the cemetery, where they were laid at the final resting place of veterans and their families.

Shine said the retrieval ceremony is typically a smaller event than the laying of the wreaths.

“The turnout has historically been about 400 people,” she said. “Volunteers will remove the nearly 5,000 wreaths from the graves, remove the red bow, then place the wreaths on poles to be stored in our truck until next year.”

The retrieval is expected to take about an hour and volunteers should be at the cemetery by 2 p.m.
